Interview with Shawnah McDermott, co-proprietor
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: Wendy White and myself started a nonprofit, Mile High Women’s Outreach Center, in 2013. The organization started because there was a huge need for restorative therapeutic services that specialized in sex trafficking, here locally in Colorado. In March of 2014, Wendy started to make all-natural bath and body products to give to friends and family as gifts, from home. The positive feedback received encouraged and inspired Wendy and I to start Glamour, Glitz & Bubbly, which we initially formed to help fund Mile High Women’s Outreach Center.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We provide the customer the opportunity to be creative and know exactly what goes into their bath or body product, in the scent and color they want. We have more than 100 essential oils, fragrance oils and a fun and fabulous chic environment that allows the creativity of the individual come to fruition. Glamour, Glitz & Bubbly offers a fun place where folks can gather to make quality products.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: There is much about Glamour, Glitz & Bubbly that we love. We both find themselves being creative, helping others find their creativity and help others love their bodies they were given. Glamour, Glitz & Bubbly allows us to do much and hopefully make a difference in others’ lives. The environment encourages every person that enters the boutique, to experience the value of taking care of themselves. Every guest that comes in will experience the best product that immediately makes a difference on his or her skin. They walk out feeling better.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The biggest challenge we face is that neither of us come from money; we are truly small- business owners trying to make it. And our location. Though we love being in Historic Downtown Littleton, being on Alamo does not promote the foot traffic that Main Street does. We continually do our best to get traffic to Alamo, but many people do not realize that there is more to Historic Downtown Littleton than Main Street.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: Every customer or guest that enters the Glamour, Glitz & Bubbly boutique or who meets Wendy or me will be surprised to learn that they we are both scared to death every day, but continue to show up. We are survivors, both determined to make a difference in others’ lives, and really want everyone that enters the boutique to leave feeling a little better about themselves, even if there is no purchase. Neither of us is as strong as we might appear … and our business scares the death out of us and we don’t want to fail.
