Interview with Matthew Hammel, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I have always been involved in sports. When I graduated college and realized I couldn’t play sports anymore, I found fitness as a way to keep playing.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We try to separate Green Door Fitness with a unique twist: one-on-one personal training with no appointments necessary. While all the other gyms are focused on running a class and getting more people in the door, we are trying to focus more on people and knowing they will bring friends in to Green Door. We know every one of our clients, their injuries and what they did yesterday. We have a neighborhood feel, like “Cheers.”
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love getting to know all of our members who turn into our friends. I spend more time with most of them training for races or travelling for races so that we see each other more than our own families. I do what I love, getting to know people, having a good time and staying active.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our biggest challenge will be outdoing our first year. We had an unbelievable first year. That puts pressure on me to do better and make Green Door Fitness more inviting for new members to become a part of our growing community.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: You would be surprised to know that throughout the month of April, Green Door Fitness had a challenge to see how many burpees one could do every day for a month. Some people did five a day, and the most we had was 200 a day. For the month, we did 75,810!
