For a late-inning, go-ahead home run, Nick Hundley’s line drive shot in the eighth inning Tuesday against the Phillies had more oomph behind it for the Rockies.
“So far this year, yeah,” Hundley said.
Hundley, after turned a Justin De Fratus slider in a 1-2 count into a solo HR to left-center that , calmly walked to the dugout. Then when he got to the top step, Hundley fired up. He high-fived his teammates like he was testing their hand strength.
On Monday, by first base ump Hunter Wendelstedt for arguing a strike call. On Tuesday, Wendelstedt was behind Hundley as the home plate ump.
Hundley’s return led to a 2-for-4 night with two RBIs.
“I don’t think last night had anything to do with it,” manager Walt Weiss said. “But guys have been battling and it’s been frustrating. So you hit a big home run like that, there’s some emotion involved with it. He was fired up.”
Hundley now has at least a hit in 16 of his past 19 games. Since April 20, he’s hitting .333 with three home runs, three doubles and 10 RBIs. Overall, he’s hitting .307.
And the Rockies, who also got a game-tying two-run double from Troy Tulowitzki in the seventh, snapped a six-game losing skid at Coors Field.
“We need big two-out hits,” Hundley said. “We’ve done a good job getting traffic on the bases. Now it has to continue. We have to earn these victories. Nobody’s going to give anything to you in this league, in this game. We have to expect that about ourselves and win games consistently.”
