BOULDER — A Boulder District Court judge on Friday sentenced Abel Lujan to 48 years in prison for the 1999 murder of 30-year-old Bernadine “Bernie” Frost, the maximum term allowed under the law.
At Friday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors painted Lujan as a violent, antisocial man with a nearly 30-year history of felony convictions and violent assaults, mainly against women.
They asked for the maximum sentence of 48 years.
Defense attorneys asked for a lesser sentence in the 25- to 30-year range, arguing that Lujan suffers from multiple mental health problems and was severely abused as a child.
