Re: “Poverty brings different challenges for Colorado rural, urban families,” May 24 news stories.

Tom McGhee’s informative articles on living in poverty, with photos by Craig F. Walker, are no doubt enlightening to many Post readers. The articles sometimes use the term TANF, which stands for Temporary Aid for Needy Families. The key word here is “temporary.” TANF provides a maximum benefit of 60 months. The person who applies for TANF and is accepted into the program is required to make specific education and or/work commitments. The federal governmentap goal is to invest time and money into a temporary program that will lead to a person’s independence from the welfare system. It is not a program for individuals that lives on in perpetuity.
