The Nuggets’ search for their next head coach appears to be nearing a close. The known candidates are interim coach Melvin Hunt, former Suns, Knicks and Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni and former Kings coach Mike Malone.

Malone is not a new entrant; he appeared on many initial lists connected with the search. But according to an report, Malone was granted a second interview with the Nuggets this week. With the NBA draft coming June 25, it’s believed the Nuggets would like to finish their search soon to have the new coach help with preparations.

Malone coached 106 games in just over one season with the Kings, compiling a 39-67 record. He was fired 24 games into this past season amid reports that his defense-first style clashed with what Kings executives wanted. The former Warriors assistant remains one of the most respected coaches in the NBA.

The Nuggets continue their coaching search as they work out draft prospects. They brought in Kentucky’s Willie Cauley-Stein on Monday, and they’re expected to have Duke’s Justise Winslow in town Wednesday.
