The Rockies aren’t even in town, but the rain will still keep falling in Denver on Thursday.

Certainly Colorado’s oft-postponed baseball team would feel at home with the forecast issued by the National Weather Service in Boulder — widespread thunderstorms throughout the day, with the chance of heavy rainfall during the afternoon and evening.

The service also issued a flash-flood watch for the Denver area that will run from late Thursday through Friday morning.

According to a bulletin from the weather service, on Thursday, a cold front will push into northeastern Colorado following an “abundance of moisture” that has moved into the state.

“Showers and thunderstorms will be likely across the area,” the bulletin said. “Some of the storms could become severe in the afternoon and evening, especially over the Palmer Divide. Those storms could produce large hail and possibly tornadoes.”

The high temperature Thursday is expected to be in the low to mid-70s. Friday’s high may reach only the mid-60s.

At that point, forecasters say, there will be an opportunity for a reprieve and a return to more summer-like conditions.
