Authorities say a 27-year-old man fatally shot in Strasburg by an Arapahoe County deputy Saturday after was wanted on two New Mexico no bond warrants.

The county sheriff’s office said Damien James Ramirez had “made recent comments about not going back to jail and planned on killing as many people as possible when contacted by law enforcement.”

Ramirez, who authorities say was a registered sex offender, was wanted by New Mexico police on suspicion of a parole violation, a probation violation, sexual assault and rape. The county sheriff’s office said Wednesday he was from Albuquerque.

The Ramirez died of a gunshot wound to the chest. The coroner’s office ruled his manner of death homicide.

Authorities say the deputy who fired the bullet that killed Ramirez has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by county prosecutors.

Ramirez carjacked a vehicle and led authorities on a chase exceeding 100 mph before he was forced off the road, officials say. Ramirez then ran into the middle of a field firing at officers, according to authorities.

It was there he was fatally shot, officials say.

Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene.
