Shane Ray’s welcome to the NFL has been all about rehabilitation.
Ray suffered a turf toe injury during a January bowl game with Missouri, and his recovery was delayed because of predraft workouts.
When he arrived in Denver, the Broncos made a point to take it slow with his rehabilitation, allowing his toe ample time to heal before he stepped back on the field.
But Ray’s progress hit a snag recently: A strained quadriceps limited him to stretching and strength drills with trainers on the sideline Thursday.
Phillips, who has been impressed by Ray’s ability to quickly pick up the defense in the classroom, said he hopes to have Ray involved more in team drills next week.
Pressure on punters. Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis said the Broncos’ punting competition has been heating up between veteran Britton Colquitt and newcomer Karl Schmitz, a street free agent acquisition.
“They’re working both together,’ DeCamillis said Thursday. “It was a good day for both of them from the standpoint that they were pretty even. It’s a good competition.”
