COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Springs City Councilwoman Helen Collins has requested a “full trial” before the council on three ethics accusations her fellow council members brought against her.
Collins’ response was swift after the council officially notified her last week of the action against her, taken during a June 9 council meeting she attended.
In an e-mail to City Councilwoman Merv Bennett, she said she will file pretrial motions “that will affect or eliminate the need for a trial,” citing “the illegality of the ethics ordinance and illegal actions” by the council; by City Attorney Wynetta Massey, who filed the ethics complaint against her; and by the city’s Independent Ethics Commission, which investigated the complaint and recommended she be censured.
“I suggest the council should withdraw all three charges to end this politically motivated witch hunt,” Collins wrote.
