In his article Stuart Clark Rogers’ writes, “Even with the finest, most expert and up-to-date medical evaluations, my experience suggests that we must take responsibility for our own health care needs.” (Longmont Times-Call file)

Re: “Take health care into your own hands,” June 16 Colorado Voices column.

I read Stuart Clark Rogers’ column because for some time we have been urged at every turn, by the manufacturers of medical devices and the pharmaceutical industry, to do just what the headline advises.

As I have aged, I hear more stories like Rogers’ from friends and family: Demand testing and treatment until you are satisfied, for the time being at least, that all that should be done has indeed been done.

There is little discussion of the expenses of this dogged pursuit of a life extended, or just improved. The author seems to have the financial resources to fund his quest; not everyone is so fortunate. There is no real mention of recovery periods that can last months, or years, with more tests, medications and therapies.

I have filled out my advanced directives and wear a “do not resuscitate” bracelet. Itap not for everyone, but it is how I have chosen to take health care out of industrial hands and put it back into my own.
