A Cortez woman is set to do jail time for shooting her neighbor’s dog.
Marie Sage, 43, is set to report to the Montezuma County Jail next Monday to serve a two-day sentence, which will be followed by an additional three days under house arrest.
The sentence stemmed from a February incident that ended with Sage shooting her neighbor’s dog three times with a rifle. Sage was charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
Public defender Amy R. Smith claimed the dog entered her client’s property and acted aggressively toward her pet. Smith argued that Sage made a poor split-second decision.
“This is a moral transgression that requires moral retribution,” countered assistant district attorney Sean Murray.
After her release, Sage will be placed on 24 months of unsupervised probation. She also was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. Fines and court costs totaled $433.50.
