While banning Internet access taxes is an important step in addressing online commerce, itap by no means the only one. (AFP/Getty Images file)

Re: “The Internet and taxes: A tangled web,” June 22 editorial.

Regarding sales taxes on online vs. brick-and-mortar stores, your editorial says, “The retail playing field needs to be leveled.” The obvious way would be to eliminate sales taxes on brick-and-mortar stores — and shrink government to fit. I’m old enough to remember when there was no sales tax. I would gladly return to less government.

We don’t want to accept the fact that we live in a world economy. Tax Amazon, and people will buy directly from companies outside the US. Raise the minimum wage and jobs leave the country. It has been easy to buy directly from suppliers outside the U.S. for at least 15 years on eBay. We must acknowledge that taxes affect the competitive position of every job and every product when we are in a world economy.
