Re: “What President Obama really said on mass shootings,” June 24 letter to the editor.
I take issue with letter-writer David Ryan’s comments on increasing gun-control policies.
There are extensive gun-control policies in place at federal and state levels. Legitimate gun purchasers must go through a thorough state background check. Itap been my experience that most gun owners or purchasers have taken some sort of firearm safety and operation classes. On the other hand, those who operate outside of the law could care less about the legalities of gun control, safety or operation.
I can only wonder what other control policies Ryan would put in place that legitimate firearm owners would be subject to, which everybody else would ignore.

This letter was published in the June 26 edition. Can we please change “gun control” to “gun safety”? No one is talking about taking guns away from law-abiding citizens. That would obviously be impossible. But if gun owners are not in favor of some reasonable gun-safety laws like background checks and putting a limit on the size of ammunition magazines to keep guns out of the hands of nuts, then they don’t deserve to be part of the conversation.
The problem seems to be paranoia. How else to explain the vehement opposition to any reasonable gun-safety laws?
