The Confederate flag flies on the South Carolina State House grounds in Columbia, South Carolina, June 24. The Confederate battle flag was taken down Wednesday outside Alabama’s state legislature as Americans increasingly shun the Civil War era saltire after the Charleston church massacre. I am in total agreement with those who believe it is far overdue for South Carolina and others to put their Confederate flags in a museum. But letap use common sense in wanting all traces and symbols of the Confederacy in the Civil War to vanish. I would equate this to some wanting to pretend the Holocaust never existed.
It would be a tragedy to remove the statues of Jefferson Davis and others because some think it will stop racism. Reading and watching documentaries about the Civil War only heightens my appreciation that America no longer has slavery. Generations to come need to hear the stories to be grateful America continues to stamp out prejudices and let all people be free.
We are a world and people created by God. Our Founding Fathers embraced this and it is a crying shame that today’s America has gotten so far from that truth.
