Colorado Department of Human Services executive director Reggie Bicha. (Denver Post file)
Re:”An atrocious use of body checks by Department of Human Services,” July 2 editorial.
I believe that the Colorado Department of Human Services’ “body checks” are a violation of the civil rights of every individual resident and his/her guardian. If this had been done by a private facility, it seems reasonable to say there would be pending lawsuits. What is really upsetting is that the majority of residents, if not all of them, could not understand what the checks were all about. And they were forced to participate. If these had been average people, or children, I’d bet the Colorado population would be in a real uproar.
Proceeding without some type of recompense and no formal apology shows the lack of respect that Human Services director Reggie Bicha holds for the intellectually and developmentally disabled population.
