Colorado’s first human case of West Nile virus this year has been diagnosed in an adult man in Mesa County, the state health department reported Wednesday.

And mosquitoes collected in Larimer and Denver counties are carrying West Nile virus, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed.

The department expects more counties to find infected mosquitoes as summer continues.

Last year, 118 people in Colorado are known to have contracted West Nile virus, and four died.

Health officials advise using mosquito repellent — DEET is an effective ingredient — and otherwise avoiding mosquito bites.
