Re: “Andrew Hamilton tries climbing Colorado’s 14ers in record time,” July 8 news story.

Honestly, another story on some guy who is pursuing self-aggrandizement by “breaking” a record to summit all Colorado fourteeners in record time?

Count me as a detractor. Climbing fourteeners and reaching the summit is about personal accomplishment, about enjoying the challenge, the beauty and the camaraderie that is present on the climbs. It is about soaking it all in and enjoying the goal at the summit and at base — not rushing off to the next climb at warp speed. The beauty in Colorado’s high country is exceptional and is best enjoyed if you take time to smell the roses — or the lichen — and enjoy visiting with the marmots and the picas.
