Re: “Hobby Lobby advertisement got it right on religion,” July 13 letter to the editor.
Letter-writer Mary Carter, in her diatribe about the infallibility of her particular God and of the unerring truth of Hobby Lobby’s take on the words of our Founding Fathers, seems to be engaged in cherry picking of text.
Upon closer examination of Thomas Jefferson’s philosophy of governance, it becomes obvious that he saw forcing any religion upon the citizenry as a form of tyranny. And then there’s John Adams’ take: “Let the human mind loose. It must be loose. It will be loose. Superstition and dogmatism cannot confine it.”
Perhaps the most frightening words from Carter were these: “I truly feel sorry for them [atheists] because they might have a surprise coming.”
As an atheist, I would never wish that Carter spend an eternity in any hell, shoveling coal at the behest of the Devil. But since there are no gods, no devil and no hell, the point becomes moot.
