Interview with Helen Rice, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: As an accountant in the oil and gas industry for years, I dreamed of someday owning my own artisan shop/gallery. The opportunity presented itself and I had the good fortune to follow my dream. Willow set up shop 11 years ago in a small side street location in historic downtown Littleton, but now occupies a more prominent space on the corner of Prince and Main streets.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Unlike most gift shops, Willow specializes in locally hand-made gifts. We represent approximately 200 artists at any given time, who create unique and affordable gifts for almost anyone on your list. Because so many of our artists are from the Denver metro area, we can assist with our customers’ special order needs. Our location also sets us apart from others in that we are part of a historic district that has worked hard to maintain a small-town shopping experience.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: In no specific order, supporting local artists, forging friendships with so many people in the art community, being my own boss, having complete creative control of the direction of my business and providing a marketplace for unique and beautiful hand-made gifts.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The economy. It’s a store full of wants, not needs.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: Most people are surprised that I come from an extensive accounting background instead of a creative/artistic background. Believe me, it has come in handy to have that accounting experience when it comes to the financial end of the business.
