A line of gusty thunderstorms is expected to move through the metro area Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service said, with lightning, wind gust of 50 mph and some hail.

The storms are expected to move through until about 5:30 p.m., the NWS said about 4 p.m.

Earlier, the NWS had called for a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon in the city. Forecasters say temperatures should top out near 87 degrees.

“There will be a chance of afternoon and early evening thunderstorms over the higher terrain, with a slight chance of storms elsewhere,” the weather service said in a forecast bulletin. “The storms will produce gusty winds, small hail and brief heavy rain.”

Into next week, forecasters say mountain areas will continue to see afternoon showers and thunderstorms develop each day.

“Local moderate to heavy rainfall will be the main threat from these storms,” the bulletin said. “On the plains, drier and warmer weather will prevail through Saturday as temperatures aloft become warm enough to suppress the development of afternoon showers.”

On Sunday, forecasters say a surface cold front will move into the region as an “upper trough moves overhead.”

“The chance of thunderstorms on the plains will increase while high temperatures drop back to the lower 80s,” the bulletin says. “The unsettled weather will remain over the region Monday and Tuesday as moisture aloft returns from the south.”

Some thunderstorms early next week could bring significant rainfall, according to the weather service.
