Castle Rock police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a 36-year-old mother of five and the attempted suicide of her estranged husband in the Founders Village neighborhood, authorities say.
The names of the victim and suspect have not been released.
None of the children, ages 5 to 15, were hurt during the early-morning encounter.
The suspect, who allegedly stabbed the woman before stabbing himself, was listed in critical condition as he underwent surgery, according to a news release by Castle Rock police.
His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, said Castle Rock police Cmdr. Jason Lyons.
Castle Rock detectives were called at 4:50 a.m. on a domestic disturbance call to a home in the 100 block of South Amherst Street in the Founders Village neighborhood.
The brother of the victim, who also lived in the home, called police and reported that her estranged husband had broken into the home, Lyons said.
“There is no threat to the community,” the report says.
The victim was staying at the home with her mother and brother to escape a domestic violence situation, said Caroline Kipp, spokeswoman for Castle Rock police. “It’s very sad,” Kipp said. “Our hearts go out to this family.”
Kipp said that a team of victim’s assistance workers immediately responded to the home to speak with the children and the victim’s mom and brother, who are Castle Rock residents, according to police.
“They may have been witnesses to the act, and they know their mother was killed,” Lyons said.
