Tonight-July 31: The New York Philharmonic begins its annual residency at the Bravo! Vail music festival this week, and the lineup has some sure winners. Bramwell Tovey conducts tonight’s opener with Jon Kimura Parker soloing on Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor. The Phil’s main music director Alan Gilbert takes the podium Wednesday for the audience-pleaser of the entire season with violinist Midori performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, followed by the orchestra’s take on Mahler’s great Symphony No. 5. The wrap-up is July 31 with Gilbert conducting Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Vail has plenty of side concerts, all on the website, that can round out your trip.
