Fran Woodke, pictured on the right, on Wednesday hugs her best friend, Janine Smith, inside Woodke’s new studio apartment at Odyssey Residences, a 36-unit affordable-housing building for female veterans and families in need.

Odyssey Residences, located at 4705 High Street in Denver, was created for The Empowerment Program by longtime Denver developers and affordable-housing advocates Jim Mercado and Ken Hoagland.

Mayor Michael Hancock attended Wednesday’s grand opening of the complex. The building, adjacent to the historic Elyria school, will serve as a community facility for residents and for Clinica Tepeyac, a nonprofit health care provider.
