Justin Morneau, on the Rockies’ disabled list for more than two months with a concussion and a neck sprain, and is hopeful that it’s in his future.

His return to the Rockies, though, is uncertain.

When asked if Morneau could still return to the Rockies this season, Colorado manager Walt Weiss said:

“Yeah, you know, I’m not sure. This is a very unique set of circumstances here.”

Morneau dove for a ground ball May 13 in Anaheim against the Angels and essentially suffered whiplash. The resulting concussion stems in part from his history of head injuries.

“It’s been my plan all along (to return),” . “I didn’t think I would be going through everything if it wasn’t for the purpose of trying getting back on the field. When that is, I don’t know. But I’m hopeful and that’s my goal.”

Morneau is in the second year of a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the Rockies. He took home $5 million in 2014 while winning the National League batting title. He makes $6.75 million this year. And there’s a mutual option for 2016 that includes a $75,000 buyout of the Rockies decline.

If Morneau’s future with the Rockies remains murky, Weiss said they certainly still want him around.

“It’s a big part of it. When you’re hurt, you don’t feel like you’re part of the team,” Weiss said Wednesday. “Those guys who have long-term injuries, it’s really important that they still feel a part of the team.

“Obviously, when the game starts, they can’t. But all the periphery things, they can be around. Especially a couple guys you consider core guys. They can have an influence on the club still — a veteran like Morneau, even more so.”
