Police in Walsenburg say a man who allegedly assaulted his mother on Wednesday afternoon fired a rifle at responding officers.

About 4:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home on the 500 block of West 11th Street on a report of a disturbance.

“Upon arrival, officers found a female victim, a half a block away from the residence, who reported she was assaulted by her son,” police said. “When officers drove up to the residence, the alleged assault suspect fired one shot at the officers with a rifle.”

Police say officers were able to get the suspect to drop his weapon. When police tried to take arrest the suspect, he struggled and officers tased him.

“The suspect was taken to the Huerfano County jail and booked in on attempted first-degree murder charges against the officers along with several other charges,” police said.

Authorities did not immediately release the suspect’s name.
