Hundreds of Bass Pro Shops employees will be hunting for new jobs after the giant outdoors retailer announced layoffs.

Paul Shore, the company’s vice president of human resources, said the retailer was laying off an average of six employees at most of its retail stores. Some employees at its Denver and Colorado Springs locations will lose their jobs, but Shore did not have exact numbers.

This month, the company said it was to build a 100,000-square-foot megastore in east Loveland.

Shore said the decisions to lay off workers and cancel building plans were unrelated. “We’re absolutely committed to the Colorado stores. They’re good stores and a good market.”

The company also laid off about 60 employees at its corporate headquarters in Springfield, Mo., and at a woodworking shop. The layoffs are an effort to be more efficient and had nothing to do with the company’s financial situation, Shore said. Bass Pro employs more than 22,000 people and has 70 stores in the United States and five in Canada. The company plans to open eight stores this year, Shore said.
