Police are investigating the discovery of a body found in the South Platte River Saturday morning, police say.

So far, their review is being called a death investigation, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.

The body was reported at 8:46 a.m. Denver firefighters were still trying to retrieve the body from the water an hour later, Jackson said.

Once it is removed from the river, detectives will examine the body for signs of trauma that could indicate foul play, he said.

The cause of death could have been the result of an accident, Jackson said.

Ultimately, a coroner from the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death and an investigator from the office will confirm the identity of the victim, he said.
