A man arrested in Golden and placed handcuffed into the back of a patrol car on Tuesday suffered a medical condition and was rushed to a hospital where he died, police said.
The incident began about 10:15 a.m. near Pine Ridge Road and Colorado Highway 93 where the man, who was wanted on a parole violation out of Maryland, worked, according to a Golden Police Department media release.
United States marshals went to the man’s workplace to take him into custody and he attempted to run away. Two Golden officers working in the area on an unrelated call encountered the man and told him to stop.
“The suspect walked toward the officers and did not do as he was ordered,” police said. “The officer put him in an arm restraint taking him to the ground in order to handcuff him.”
Once handcuffed, the man, 51, sat on a curb and spoke with officers, police said. A patrol car was driven to the scene and the man was placed in the back seat.
“Within a few minutes of being in the car, the officers noticed the suspect was sweating profusely, becoming unresponsive but breathing,” police said.
Police called for an ambulance and the man was taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood where he later died, the release said.
An initial investigation indicates that the man, who was a convicted”sexually violent predator with a long criminal history” had a “pre-existing medical condition,” police said.
His name was not released pending notification of family. An investigation is ongoing.
