Human remains unearthed this week at a construction site in Fountain are those of a American Indian woman, perhaps thousands of years old.

Workers at the Ventana subdivision construction site found the remains, including a skull, while installing a drainage pipe in the 10000 block of Old Pueblo Road on Wednesday, according to the Fountain Police Department.

When police investigators arrived on the scene, “the skull could be seen sitting on the ground near where it was found,” police said in a news release. “The person who found it stated that he removed it only to see what it was, then placed it back near where he found it.”

On Friday, state archaeologist Thomas Carr investigated the discovery on the site and determined the remains are “ancient, ranging anywhere from several hundreds of years old to several thousands of years old,” according to the release.

The remains were taken to the History Colorado Center with the ultimate goal of repatriation to the appropriate Native American tribe for reburial.

No other remains were found in the area.
