A 68-year-old man who Pueblo police say was found dead of apparent suicide Monday afternoon was the gunman hours earlier.

According to police, Francisco Antonio Fresquez died of a self-inflected gunshot wound about 1 p.m. on the 2500 block of Poplar Street.

“Fresquez was found in the backyard area of a family member’s home,” police said in a news release.

Authorities say Fresquez was wanted in the 7 a.m. shooting Monday of 49-year-old Robert Ramirez, who was wounded several times as he arrived for work at Cesar Chavez Academy.

None of Ramirez’s wounds were life threatening, police say.

“The investigation to this point has revealed that Fresquez is the estranged ex-boyfriend to Ramirez’s mother,” the release said. “The reason as to why Fresquez targeted Ramirez is still under investigation.”

Authorities say no students were at the school at the time of the shooting since classes are not in session.
