Investigators are looking for more information about a Sunday fire in Eagle County that officials believe was ignited by people shooting exploding targets in dry grass.
The Bureau of Land Management and the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office are asking for the public’s help regarding the fire that took place early Sunday afternoon at Cottonwood Pass in Eagle County, according to a Bureau of Land Management news release.
“People whose actions result in wildfires can be held liable for the cost of suppressing the fire, regardless of whether the fire was intentional,” the release said.
More than 40 local and federal fire fighters responded to the fire.
The Bureau of Land Management said that precautions need to be taken due to dry grass such as making sure campfires are out, ensuring chainsaws retain their spark arresters and avoiding parking or shooting in dry grass.
Anyone with information about the Sunday fire are asked to call the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office at 970-328-8500 or Eagle County Crime Stoppers at 970-328-7007.
