Highlight: At the professional level, the ability to follow a solid performance remains as important as the initial shine. Quarterback Brock Osweiler continues to build off his successful preseason debut. Though he probably will play less Saturday with Peyton Manning scheduled to log a “quarter-a-and-half to a half,” according to coach Gary Kubiak, Osweiler appears ready. He connected on multiple crossing routes Tuesday with tight end Dominique Jones and wide receiver Cody Latimer. Osweiler then spent time after practice on a side field working on his throwing mechanics. Osweiler is not the starter, but he’s learning to carry himself like one.
WATCH:
Lowlight: Left offensive tackle Ty Sambrailo looked like a starter in name only. The rookie experienced his worst practice as a Bronco, being schooled repeatedly by edge rushers Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware. Coach Gary Kubiak says the challenge will make Sambrailo better. The Broncos should find out more this week when Sambrailo, probably with a tight end to help, lines up over Houston’s reigning NFL defensive player of the year, J.J. Watt. Sambrailo struggled early last week against the Seattle Seahawks before settling down.
WATCH:
Position battle: The Broncos’ depth means a few name players won’t make the cut. An interesting scenario is playing out at offensive guard. Ben Garland began as the starter, but rookie Max Garcia replaced him. Garland had previously beaten out Shelley Smith. Neither met expectations in the preseason opener as the second-string line struggled with communication issues. Teams need a backup guard, but it’s fair to wonder whether Garland can play that role if he doesn’t play both the left and right sides.
Quarterback watch: The defense dominated. It was not a good day to throw the ball or attempt to pass. The Broncos defenders lived in the backfield. Aqib Talib and Darian Stewart intercepted Peyton Manning. Osweiler had multiple passes batted down, including one on an athletic play by Malik Jackson.
Camp facts. The Broncos hold their usual morning workout 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, which is open to fans free of charge. Their afternoon walkthrough is closed to the public. Seating and parking for the morning session are on a first-come, first-served basis. Gates open at about 8:30 a.m.
