As I am hearing impaired, I watch TV with closed captioning (CC) turned on. This way I can read what is being said. It is extremely helpful. I’m sure there are thousands in the Denver metro area who do this as well. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that the TV stations almost never have CC for their commercials.
I contacted the NBC station regarding this, and was told that the Federal Communications Commission doesn’t mandate closed-captioning for commercials. It seems to me that the TV stations should be more involved with the hearing-impaired community by not just doing the very minimum that the FCC requires. They should go beyond the federal mandated minimum and make the requirement themselves that all commercials have CC. A little extra time and effort on each ad would bring the advertisers’ message to us who need to read it.
