Re: “Nuclear scientist: The Iran agreement is sound,” Aug. 18 guest commentary.

Professor Vic Viola uses his credentials as an academic scientist to endorse the nuclear agreement with Iran. But the views he expresses are political, not scientific. Unfortunately, too many academics don’t seem to know the difference.

Viola almost concedes the agreement will lead to a nuclear Iran, saying it will be restrained because “any nuclear attack initiated by Iran [against Israel] would ensure self-annihilation.” This betrays an ignorance of both military strategy and geography. Given its small geographic size, Israel can be instantly annihilated in a nuclear first strike by Iran.

Israel knows this and simply cannot tolerate a nuclear Iran. It will strike Iran to prevent it, a fact apparently not contemplated by the professor.

As some of the partisan wrangling over the terms of the Iran deal seems to be diminishing, one consequence appears to have been overlooked. While the deal may be the best of bad choices regarding nuclear development, I haven’t heard much discussion about the result of additional billions of dollars into the Iranian coffers. The funds that will be unfrozen will be able to give Iran’s stated goal of destroying Israel a gigantic boost as they can be funneled into their state-funded terrorist groups. I sincerely hope our elected officials examine this critical result and formalize mechanisms to destroy those terrorists threatening Israel’s existence.

All President Obama has to do to obtain congressional approval for the Iran nuclear agreement is state that he is against it.
