Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said he’s pleased with Demaryius Thomas’ progress after he missed the offseason workouts because of contract negotiations. Kubiak said the starting receiver will play Saturday in Houston. How much will be determined by the coaches later this week.

“I think he’s ready to go play as long as Peyton (Manning) plays,” Kubiak said. He said Manning will probably play through at least part of the second quarter.

Reeves returns. Former Broncos coach and Ring of Famer Dan Reeves watched the team’s practice from the sideline Wednesday and came away impressed by what Kubiak has done in his first eight months on the job. But not surprised.

“Gary was always prepared,” Reeves said of Kubiak’s days as a backup to John Elway. “If something would have happened to John, he was always there. So you could see some of the coaching things that you like to see.

“I was in a lot of quarterback meetings with Gary and John, and to see his knowledge of the game back then, he was definitely one of the smarter guys. … He had a great feel for things, and always knew the offense backward and forward.”

Reeves, who is the father-in-law to special teams coach Joe DeCamillis, said the Broncos have the pieces to contend for the Super Bowl.

“It’s going to be exciting to see,” Reeves said. “They’ve already lost an offensive tackle (Ryan Clady). Hopefully they can stay healthy, and if they do, they’re going to be one of the teams to contend with.”

Footnotes. Emmanuel Sanders (hamstring), Tony Carter (hamstring), Marvin Austin (groin) and Lerentee McCray (multiple injuries) observed practice as they continued to rehab their injuries. … Some veterans who suited up for Friday’s preseason game were given a rest day Wednesday: Aqib Talib, T.J. Ward, DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller.
