WELD COUNTY — A 36-year-old Greeley woman is the first person reported contracting West Nile virus in Weld County this year, health authorities say.

The woman was hospitalized with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the disease, according to a news release from the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment.

The Greeley woman was hospitalized in early August and has been released.

“Fortunately most individuals infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms,” said Dr. Mark E. Wallace, executive director of the Weld County Health Department.

Only about one in five people who are infected with West Nile will develop a fever with other symptoms such as aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.
