BOULDER — The left-leaning University of Colorado is hoping to expand intellectual and political diversity on the Boulder campus with the creation of the Center for Western Civilization, Thought and Policy, the university announced Friday.

The center is an expansion and combination of the Center for Western Civilization and the visiting scholar in conservative thought and policy position, which is in its third year.

The expanded center seeks to encourage debate and well-rounded discussions of important issues on a campus where just 6 percent of faculty members identify as conservative.

“The goal is not to bring in people who all represent the same point of view, but to bring in a range of voices,” said Bob Pasnau, the center’s director. “There will be Republicans participating, but there’ll be Democrats. I expect there’ll be socialists and there’ll be a lot of folks who are not coming from a political perspective at all but are scholars of Western civilization in one way or another.”
