
The Fero’s Bar & Grill killer was quick to flash a smile Friday morning, the day after His mother sat in the front row of the courtroom, smiling and laughing with a member of the defense team.
Dexter Lewis, will be formally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Sept. 30, Denver District Judge John Madden IV decided Friday morning. Families of the five victims will have a chance to address the judge that day, either through letters or by speaking in court.
Those families were slated to address the jury in the third and final stage of the trial’s penalty phase, but the jury could not come to a unanimous conclusion about whether mitigating factors about Lewis’ life — such as — outweighed the crime’s aggravating factors. That meant the trial ended. Lewis was facing a potential death sentence.
Lewis, who appeared clean-cut throughout the trial, had a new hairdo Friday. He wore a short ponytail, just as his father, Dexter Lewis Sr., used to.
