When Matt and P.J. Glass first moved out from Ohio, still kid-less, they bought Vail passes and started hanging at trendy ski resorts in Eagle County. Now they have a 2-year-old and a newborn – and they’re looking at the mountains entirely differently; spending regular weekends up there with the kids, in their own place, in quiet, laid-back Grand County.
“Life changed after we got kids,” recalls P.J. Glass. “Places just didn’t feel the same.” With number-two on the way, she read a Post article about new, modestly priced condos in kid-friendly Granby Ranch, a comprehensive mountain resort in Granby – 90 minutes from Denver, a little closer than Vail. “The area wasn’t as commercialized,” she says, “…more low-key, a little slower, with plenty of fun stuff to explore.” Granby Ranch has its own ski mountain with a direct-to-parallel training program for kids, which the couple will introduce their oldest to when he turns three; but for now, they’re bringing the dogs along, hiking and biking the lift-served trails, swimming at Granby Ranch’s pool and spa, and exploring local attractions like the pretty town of Grand Lake. Plans, says P.J., often start out for a low-key weekend in their two-bedroom, alpine-finished unit – but they’ve been surprised by how much fun stuff is going on up there. “The rodeo in Granby was really cool,” P.J. notes. “And you can get a seat.” Jim Houston with The Lodge at Ten Mile Creek will show you all the rest that you get at Granby Ranch, at prices from as low as the $130s for a single-bedroom; from the low $300s for a kids-n-grandkids-sized 3-bedroom. The ownership package includes lift passes, winter and summer; four foursomes on Golf Granby Ranch’s scenic 18-hole course; a private fishing reserve, and miles of trails leading into 500 acres of private open space, with the National Forest beyond; not to mention lodge, pool, and a popular, family-style grill. You’ll preview 19 new condos being readied now – all completely new, rather than the dated units that are standard fare in many mountain resorts. All get classic mountain finishes: granite kitchens with pendant lights, a stone fireplace under a chinked-wood mantel, plank floors, rubbed-bronze fixtures; plus covered decks on many where you can expand the living space even during winter with an optional infrared deck heater. The Glasses took advantage of Ten Mile Creek’s customization options to do full-level plank floors. You’ll also discover how close this is to Denver – another thing the Glass family likes about Grand County. “You don’t have to deal with traffic metering at the Eisenhower Tunnel,” Matt adds, adding that the family has never spent more than two hours returning to Denver, even at peak hours.
