Re: “Denver sales tax increase for scholarships should be rejected,” Aug. 23 editorial.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Mayor Michael Hancock wants the citizens of Denver to approve a 0.8 percent sales tax to fund college tuition for Denver students. My first thought was: What a wonderful political plum to have, especially if you are the one appointing those who make the decision on doling out the dollars. I can just see the possibility of favoritism creeping into the decision-making process — not saying that it would, mind you, but it sure could.

Mr. Mayor, kindly do your job and fix our streets, police force, sheriff’s office, parks and a few other things that are going wrong with Denver, and we’ll take care of our children’s educational needs. This is a bad idea.

The conversation about college affordability in Denver starts now, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Although I graduated within the top 10 of my Denver East High School class and college was necessary to pursue my career goals, tuition was out of reach for my family. Itap groups like the Denver Scholarship Foundation that made college possible for me and so many others. I graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology and now work at University of Colorado Hospital as a medical laboratory scientist.

The growing Denver workforce needs more college graduates like me to fill positions and give back to the city, and this measure gives people the opportunity to invest in their own residents so they can do just that.

We all know that the state of Colorado won’t invest in education, but letap prove that Denver will.
