Fire broke out Sunday afternoon at an oil and gas industry drilling site east of Interstate 25 in Weld County.

Front Range Fire Rescue Authority crews, dispatched shortly after 5 p.m., attacked the flames south of Johnstown and had the fire under control within an hour, said Chief Ron Bateman.

Smoke was visible from the heavy fire for a couple of miles, Bateman said.

The fire was contained in an area near a generator. Investigators have not determined the fire’s cause, he said.

The site is owned and operated by Great Western Oil and Gas Company. Authorities were unable to say Sunday night how recently the site was active.
