A 29-year-old mother has been charged with child abuse in the death of her infant daughter.

Karla Ceballos-Andrade has been formally charged with one felony count of child abuse resulting in death, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

The charge alleges that on Aug. 13 Ceballos-Andrade left her 11-month-old daughter, Karla Karoline Garcia, in a bathtub unattended along with a 2-year-old sibling.

Ceballos-Andrade told investigators she left the children alone in the tub, in about 6-inches of water, for less than ten minutes as she did household chores, according to an arrest affidavit.

As she was straightening up her home in the 1200 block of South Birch Street, Ceballos-Andrade told investigators she heard water running. She went to the bathroom and found Karla “fully submerged” and “face down,” with the water running and the tub full.

Ceballos-Andrade pulled the infant from the tub. She told investigators the baby “did not have any life,” according to the affidavit.

Ceballos-Andrade told investigators her 2-year-old turned on the water in the tub. The infant was declared dead the following day.

Ceballos-Andrade remains in custody. Her bond is set at $100,000.

She’s scheduled to appear in Denver court Wednesday to be formally advised of the charges.
