A senior at Greeley Central High School was arrested Wednesday morning after a handgun and ammunition were found in his backpack.
Greeley-Evans School District 6 says the .38-caliber semi-automatic gun in the 17-year-old’s backpack was not loaded.
“The administrators at the school early this morning got some information some kids might have been smoking marijuana right outside,” said Theresa Myers, a district spokeswoman. “They saw some kids walking away from the school and told them to come back and the (kids) complied.”
As administrators were searching the four, they found the gun and a baggie of ammunition.
A small amount of marijuana was also located with the students.
“There was never any imminent threat to students,” Myers said. “We have no indication the student had any ill intent with this gun. He did not indicate any threat to the school. We just think it was a random thing.”
Myers said the other students — two sophomores and a junior — were released to their parents.
