Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: Growing up, I had pretty bad acne and black hair growth on my teenage face. I remember feeling so ashamed and helpless as to how to fix it and make it stop. I felt very insecure growing up because of it. I went to my family doctor, who prescribed a bunch of medications for acne that left my face raw and burned. I used tweezers to remove the hair but felt I could never keep up with the regrowth; it was a daily task. By the time I was 21, it was a mess. I discovered laser hair removal and fell in love. I had finally found a serious solution to removing my facial hair and it was life-changing. I ended up going to school for esthetics and laser esthetics to learn how to get rid of the acne as well. I was able to find solutions to both of my issues and couldn’t wait to share it with the world! I worked in my field for about seven years before opening Rhianna’s Laser & Skin Care. When I opened the spa, my goal was to hire office staff, estheticians and laser technicians who would share my same passion. I am honored to have employees who love what they do and build solid relationships with our clients.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We use the latest technology and best lasers for laser hair removal so our clients will always get the results they want. That’s the easy part. The hard part is building trust and getting our clients to feel comfortable with such an invasive and somewhat scary service. When a client calls, they’re usually skeptical, but once they get here, meet our friendly staff and receive their first treatment, they know they’re in good hands. My employees care about their well-being and it shows.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: The greatest part is watching people’s lives literally change as the months pass and their treatments have taken affect. After about the fourth or sixth appointment, you can visually see the problem area clearing up, and nothing makes us happier than to see a client’s confidence skyrocket!
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Occasionally we get clients who have been burned by other medical spas that use different lasers and of course, they feel jaded by the experience. In light of that, building trust can be a little hard. However, we do our best to relieve their anxiety and retain almost all of our clients because of our special care and expertise.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: A lot of people don’t know the science behind hair growth and development; it’s more tricky that you think. Hair grows in layers and stages. As the layer rises to the surface we have to laser each follicle in the active stage of growth. This is why it may take six to 10 months to remove all the hair because there are three different stages. Also, in 1 square inch of skin there are roughly 1,200 hair follicles.
