AURORA — He patrols the outfield with grace and skill, so what else could we expect from Quin Cotton when it came time to pick a college?
After checking out multiple schools, the senior at Regis Jesuit announced on Wednesday night that he will sign to play baseball and attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
“I didn’t have a timeline,’ Cotton said. “It just felt right and the timing was really good.”
After also considering the likes of Arkansas State, Oklahoma and West Virginia, Cotton said he chose the Antelopes “because of their player development and they have a great coach (Andy Stankiewicz) there.”
Plus, he’s very well-acquainted with former Mountain Vista infielder Marc Mumper, who’s with the program and Cotton said “he had some great things to say about it … they have a lot going for them.”
The past spring, Cotton, 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, batted .447 with six doubles, four home runs and 17 runs bated in. The 17-year-old Cotton, son of former Denver Post staffers Anthony Cotton and Theresa Smith, said he’ll have a chance to compete for playing time with the Antelopes, who compete in the WAC, as a freshman.
Cotton, a student with a 3.0 grade-point average, is considering business administration as a major along with economics and finance.
