The explanation Carly Fiorina offered for her performance at the Republican debate might sound counterintuitive for a politician: It wasn’t what she said, but how hard she listened.

“I was paying attention. I was paying very close attention every minute of that debate, because every minute counted for me,” the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive said Thursday on MSNBC.

Listening is indeed an underrated, and underused, skill among politicians. As she listened to the other contenders, Fiorina said, she kept alert for openings.

What she most wanted voters to come away with, she said, was one clear idea: “I hope what people saw last night is that I can win this job and I can do this job.”
