A kitchen fire sparked a blaze in an Arapahoe County apartment building that injured 17 residents and displaced 50.
“Based upon the fire department investigation and witness statements, the fire is determined to be accidental in nature,” said Cunningham Fire Protection District Chief Jerry Rhodes in a media release.
The at the Country Club Villas, 8824 East Florida Ave., had residents leaping from windows and scrambling down ladders to escape the smoke and flames.
The fire started in apartment 104 due to “improper disposal of materials,” the release said.
Two residents suffered serious injuries, one from smoke inhalation and the other leaping from a window.
The fire district has turned the fire scene over to the Villas’ HOA, individual owners of units, and insurance carriers to conduct their own investigations for insurance claims and restoration.
