Interview with Summer Reece, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: In early 2012, I was introduced to CrossFit by Kyle, my boyfriend and co-owner, and I fell in love with everything about CrossFit. It was challenging, exciting and so different than what I was currently doing, which was bodybuilding and personal training. In 2013, Kyle and I were asked to run the CrossFit program out of the global gym that we were currently working at. We liked the gym we were at but we wanted to provide an even better program for the members, and that’s when we made the decision to open our own affiliate, CrossFit Unveiled. We have been going strong for more than a year.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: I think all CrossFit affiliate owners can say that it’s their community of members that distinguishes them from other boxes, which I agree with 100 percent. I would say that it is our style of coaching and programming that sets us apart from other CrossFit boxes. Kyle and I, as the coaches and owners, constantly adapt and change as necessary to best suit our members while maintaining quality and consistent coaching that can be geared towards any level of CrossFitter. Part of the CrossFit model is functional fitness, and through our coaching, we teach our members to think for themselves so they can apply what they learn inside the box to their everyday lives.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: First would be the fact that I get to do what I love and I look forward to being at work everyday. Second, I get to do what I love with the man of my dreams. And last is our members. Our members treat us like superheroes, which of course we aren’t, but to get the opportunity to work with such an awesome group of people everyday that make you feel like a superhero is priceless.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: One of our biggest challenges is getting people to see that being healthy is so much more than the way a person looks. Rather, healthy is about a person’s ability to perform functional movements on a daily basis. The other challenge is dealing with the negative publicity that surrounds CrossFit and the number of injuries due to CrossFit. Yes, injuries happen, but no more than any other physical fitness program or activity. At Unveiled, we make it a priority to ensure the safety of each of our members by constantly providing instruction on proper technique, form, choosing appropriate weights for lifting and scaling movements to fit the level of each of our athletes.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: People might also be surprised to learn that we do a lot outside of the gym with our members such as hiking, Spartan races, movie nights, and local fundraiser events.
