Just when I was about to compliment the season 2 premiere of Fox’s “Gotham” for successfully introducing new characters and refocusing the story, I screened Monday’s upcoming S2 episode 2. The execution-style murders, and murders of police officers, plus videotaped threats by the self-described “maniax” perpetrators adds up to a distressing new direction for the series.
Too much recent televised violence, too many copycats out there.
While “Gotham” is doing well when it sticks to the superhero origin story, excessive violence isn’t necessary to make the crazy villains seem like bad guys.
It’s fun watching the young Bruce Wayne grow into the hero he will someday be, and the addition of James Frain is terrific (as billionaire Theo Galavan). Of course the heroic can only be as dramatic as the villains are villainous. But the season, titled “Rise of the Villains,” didn’t need to introduce such a graphic bloodbath to make its point.
